Ojai, California Portraits

With Ken + Kal

There’s something about Ojai that feels a little bit magical—like time slows down just enough for you to actually be present. When I think about Ojai, California, this session with Ken Pattywap and Kal will always coms to mind.

We met up at a place that already meant so much to them: their favorite little river spot tucked away among rocks and trees. It’s where they go to hang out, cool off, and just be together. As a photographer, those locations are always the most special—because the story is already there before I even pick up my camera.

The river was gently moving, the light was soft, and the rocks created these beautiful natural textures all around us. There was one rock in particular that completely stole the show—it sat just above the water and looked like a lily pad. Of course, we had to use it. Watching Ken and Kal sit together on it, laughing and completely in their element, felt like capturing a little piece of their world exactly as it is.

I’ve actually photographed these two before—years ago in Utah for their bridal photos—so getting to reconnect and photograph them again in this season of life felt really full circle. There’s something so special about seeing a couple over time, especially when their energy together is just as strong, playful, and genuine as ever.

Ken (who you might recognize as a member of The Aces) has the most infectious energy. She laughed so much during this session—in that unfiltered, completely-in-the-moment way that makes photos feel alive. And Kal matches her so perfectly. The way they interact is effortless and warm, like they’re always in on the same joke.

These are the kinds of sessions I love most. No pressure, no overthinking—just two people in a place they love, being exactly who they are. Ojai gave us the dreamiest backdrop, but honestly, they brought the magic with them.

If you’re dreaming about Ojai, California engagement or portrait photos, my biggest advice is to choose a location that means something to you. It doesn’t have to be famous or dramatic—sometimes a quiet river, a familiar rock, and the right person beside you is more than enough.

Ken and Kal, thank you for trusting me again. Getting to document your story—then and now—means the world.
